Facer Park in downtown Sandusky, Ohio.
The celebration begins with a short 6:00 pm ceremony at Facer Park, located at 255 Water Street in Sandusky. Keynote speaker Dr. Eugene Sanders, Superintendent of Sandusky Public Schools, will be joined by National Park Service National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom representative Deanda Johnson, as well as First Congregational UCC’s Pastor Lenore Kure, Second Baptist Church’s Pastor Reginald Taylor, and members of the Sandusky High School Gospel Choir.
A reception following the induction ceremony will be held at the Erie County Senior Center at 6:30 pm and all are invited. While no seating will be available at the Facer Park ceremony, there will be ample seating available at the Senior Center. The program is brought to you by the Erie County Historical Society and the generous support of Lake Erie Shores & Islands Welcome Center.
Facer Park is home to the life-sized sculpture, “Path to Freedom,” dedicated in November 2007 to commemorate the efforts of the clandestine Underground Railroad members who helped slaves escape across the waters of Lake Erie to freedom in Canada. Local artist Susan Schultz designed the piece featuring a man, woman, and child whose bodies and limbs are composed of 800 feet of chain. The faces and limbs are cast in bronze. Plaques containing information about the Underground Railroad surround the statue.
You are also invited to attend the Maritime Museum’s Underground Railroad/Civil War Programming on May 24 and 25.
